L-Lactide powder is an organic compound with the formula C6H8O4. It is colorless transparent flake or acicular crystal, melting point 93-95℃, boiling point 216℃, molecular weight 144, soluble in chloroform, ethanol, insoluble in water. Easy hydrolysis, easy polymerization, should be stored at low temperature. When azeotropic with water, it hydrolyzes to alpha-hydroxypropionic acid (lactic acid). Dimolecular alpha-hydroxypropionic acid forms lactide when heated. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of polylactic acid.
