Coleus barbatus (Andrews) Benth. is an erect or ascending herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family and the genus Coleus. The stem is robust, reaching up to 40 cm in height, branched, and covered with spreading long pilose hairs. The leaves are ovate-rounded, blunt or acute at the apex, with crenate margins and a nearly succulent texture.

The petioles are densely covered with villous pubescence. The inflorescence consists of verticillasters, with numerous flowers arranged in whorls. The bracts are broadly ovate-rounded, membranous, and sessile. The calyx is campanulate, with cordate calyx teeth. The corolla is purplish-blue, bilabiate, with unequal lobes and an elongated lower lip. The style extends beyond the stamens, and the disc is enlarged anteriorly. The nutlets are circular and flattened. Flowering occurs in September.

This species is distributed in northeastern Yunnan, China, and is also found in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and tropical Africa. It grows on open slopes at elevations of 2300 meters.

Its primary active component is Forskolin, with concentration specifications ranging from 10% to 98%. This compound is recognized as the most potent known activator of adenylate cyclase.
