What is dimethyl silicone oil?

Silicone oil usually refers to linear polysiloxane products that remain liquid at room temperature. Generally divided into methyl silicone oil and modified silicone oil two categories. The most commonly used silicone oil – methyl silicone oil, also known as ordinary silicone oil, its organic groups are all methyl, methyl silicone oil has good chemical stability, insulation, good hydrophobic performance.
Dimethyl silicone oil is a colorless, transparent synthetic polymer available in a wide viscosity range (5cP–8 million cP), spanning from free-flowing liquids to semi-solid forms. This material exhibits unique characteristics including exceptional smoothness, softness, and hydrophobicity, coupled with outstanding chemical stability. Its remarkable electrical insulation properties and thermal resilience allow for performance consistency across extreme temperatures.

The oil demonstrates a high flash point and low freezing point, enabling reliable operation within -50°C to +200°C. Key technical features include minimal viscosity-temperature coefficient, high compressibility, and low surface tension. With superior moisture resistance and low thermal conductivity, it delivers consistent performance in demanding environments while maintaining structural integrity.

Dimethyl silicone oil – Properties

Physical Properties & Solubility

Dimethyl silicone oil exhibits a variable consistency from clear liquid to thick semi-solid, maintaining colorlessness and odorlessness throughout. Its molecular weight depends on polymerization degree. The compound is insoluble in water, methanol, vegetable oil, and paraffin hydrocarbons, with limited solubility in ethanol, butanol, and glycerol. It demonstrates excellent solubility in aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene), ethers, and chloroalkanes.

Performance Characteristics & Applications

This silicone oil features minimal viscosity-temperature coefficient, high compressibility, and low surface tension. With outstanding moisture resistance, low thermal conductivity, and exceptional electrical insulation, it operates reliably across -50°C to +200°C. Additional advantages include high flash point, low pour point, and long-term thermal stability, making it ideal for extreme-temperature applications.

Dimethyl silicone oil – Standard

Dimethyl silicone oil – Preparation method

This product is a linear polymer of dimethylsiloxane, containing polymerized dimethylsiloxane 97.0% ~ 103.0%. It has different viscosity due to different degree of polymerization. According to the different motion viscosity, this product is divided into 20, 50, 100, 200, 350, 500, 750, 1000, 12 500, 30 000 ten models.

Using dimethyldichlorosilane, water and solvent as raw materials, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane was obtained by hydrolysis, neutralization and fractionation. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane was prepared by polymerization under the action of catalyst.
