Zinc Ricinoleate (Zn (Ri) 2) exhibits excellent selectivity and has the ability to remove odor active compounds such as nitroso compounds (NH3 and organic nitrogen) and sulfur-containing compounds (H2S, organic sulfides and thiols). In contrast to conventional catalyst (or enzyme) assisted processes, Zn (Ri) 2 was prepared on zinc foil using a simple electrochemical method in this study. The electrochemical synthesis of Zn (Ri) 2 was characterized and compared with commercially available Zn (Ri) 2, which clearly indicates that the average size and production yield largely depend on external bias and anodizing time: the diameter increased from 9.3 µ m at 30 V to 15.2 µ m at 80 V.

Especially the external bias of 80 V provides the most stable particle structure and the highest yield. During the anodizing process, particles aggregate into clusters and grow to form larger particles. Having a clear spherical shape, the increased surface area helps to improve the deodorization ability by 88% within 30 minutes, which is 2.3 times stronger than commercially available products.
